Cardiovascular disease, which is the leading cause of death worldwide, can largely be prevented through adopting a healthy lifestyle. Current recommendations emphasize the importance of following dietary guidelines that include healthy sources of dietary fats, such as those high in unsaturated fats and low in saturated fat.
The cardioprotective properties of the Mediterranean Diet have been proven, building upon the findings of the Seven Country study. Numerous epidemiological studies and intervention tests conducted in recent decades have further confirmed the close link between the Mediterranean diet and a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases. A significant component of this diet is extra virgin olive oil, which appears to play a crucial role in lowering the incidence of cardiovascular events.
Cretanthos extra virgin olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, especially oleic acid, and contains beneficial compounds like vitamin E, polyphenols, and lipid molecules with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It has become a staple in the Mediterranean Diet and is traditionally used as the primary cooking fat in the Mediterranean region, and its popularity has expanded worldwide.
Research published in the "Journal of the American College of Cardiology" concluded that consuming more than 7 grams (approximately 1/2 tablespoon) of olive oil per day is associated with a significantly reduced risk of cardiovascular mortality. The study, conducted by the "Scientific Sessions of Epidemiology and American Prevention/Lifestyle and Cardiovascular Health Cardiac Society," involved heart patients answering questionnaires about their diet and lifestyle every four years. The findings indicated that those who consumed more than half a tablespoon of olive oil daily had a 15% lower risk of any type of cardiovascular disease and a 21% lower risk of coronary heart disease.
Based on these results, it is advisable for heart patients to limit their intake of certain fats like margarine and butter, as they are rich in saturated fats, which can increase the risk of heart disease. Instead, replacing these fats with extra virgin olive oil can significantly improve their heart health.
