In our collection of aromatic plants offered, the plant dictamos stands alone as one of the most significant aromatic – medicinal plants of Crete; the relevant references date back to Antiquity, made by some of the experts of the time, such as Hippocrates, Theofrastos, and Dioscorides. All of them praise the medicinal properties of the plant.
Dittany is an endemic phrygana of Crete and its name comes from the words Dikti (mountain of Crete) and shrub.
It grows in mountainous and steep limestone areas, on gorge slopes and ravines. It is a small plant with a length of 30 to 40 cm, with a very strong smell and taste, its leaves are relatively small but thick, with a fluffy coating and its flowers are violet.
It is known by many popular names. Thus, it is called Erontas or Eros (love), Stamatochorto, Diktamnos, Adiktamnos, Stomatochorto, Stomachohorto.
According to a theory, it has been named love because when used it causes erotic arousal, while the spots where it self-seeds are so steep and difficult to approach that only someone in love would risk approaching it and cutting it off, to offer it to his loved one as a sign of faith and love.
